An Equation for Consciousness

Eckhart Tolle said that the transition from non-flowering to flowering plants was a representation of the expansion of consciousness. Likewise, the advancement of complexity of thoughts and ideas can be viewed as an expression and expansion of consciousness.

The foundation for virtually all of the advancements of our modern world were established in the late 1600s by Sir Isaac Newton. Illustrating the notion of advancement or expansion of consciousness, the mathematical concept of calculus was independently and simultaneously developed by Newton and Gottfried Leibniz.

The Newtonian laws brought the regularity and predictability of mathematics to the otherwise random natural world that was ruled by gods, angels, and demons. More important was the transformation of power from the chosen few clergy and royalty to anyone who committed themselves to the rigor of learning the language of physics. This shift in awareness is what gave rise to the American and French revolutions, reversing hundreds of years of control of information and spirituality by the self-selected elite.

For over two centuries, Newton’s laws gave rise to an increasing sense of mechanization in the universe—the notion that all things could be measured, predicted, and ultimately known. It seemed that there was less and less room for spirituality and God. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, two major expansions occurred:  relativity and quantum physics. For the last hundred years, the realization that time and space are not constant coupled with the seemingly bizarre behavior of atomic and sub-atomic particles has given pause to many physicists.

Another shift in consciousness is happening now:  the balancing between the chaos of spiritualism and the order of science; conversely the emptiness of science and the richness of spirituality. That, in and of itself, is a new blossoming of a hidden aspect of our being.

The physics of the unbelievably small—quantum physics—continues its search for the "fundamental aspect of matter." The Large Hadron Collider will soon be online and taking science even deeper into the mystery of the sub-atomic. Many people are opposed to this project, but it is necessary for our spiritual growth and will not cause a black hole as some have suggested.

Meanwhile, there is a revival taking place in the inner-space of a growing number of people. There is a confluence between the substances of physics and consciousness:  they are one and the same. Much as at the quantum level, mass and energy are not only used interchangeably, but rather simultaneously in a unit called the electron-volt (energy equals mass, E=mc2).

Much as the equation F=ma:
Force = mass * acceleration

Can be thought of as:
Force = mass (space) * acceleration (time)

The equation of the fundamental element of the universe can be thought of as intention:

Intention = Consciousness (perspective – internal) * Force (objective – external)

The experiments of the Large Hadron Collider will reveal that the sub-quarkic units are inseparable from consciousness, revealing a single unit of measure:  intention. Intention is the unifying factor between science and spirituality and thus the next stage of our evolutionary consciousness.
