Expand and accept your abundance
by Asha Hawkesworth

Mayan calendar

Everyone is cutting back, and fear rules the day. We've retreated into our dens, and we're hoarding for an anticipated long winter. We want to stay safe. We want to hold on to what we have. We're contracting, getting smaller and smaller. The problem with this is that contracting is a vicious cycle that perpetuates itself and leaves you with even less than you started with. To increase our flow of abundance and help heal the economy, we must practice expanding.

When we hold on too tightly to what we have because we fear losing it, we perpetuate the energy of lack, and whatever we focus on is what we get. So "holding on" results in precisely the thing we don't want: the loss of what we have.

The energy of lack is everywhere, increased by our ever-heightening fears, affecting everyone. Companies fear lower profits and decreased returns to their stockholders, so they cut back and lay people off. Employees everywhere fear being laid off or having their salaries cut, so they stop spending. This fulfills the fears of corporations, who then cut back further. With more people out of work, the government receives less money from income taxes, and it must cut back services. We see the effects of this today as Oregon's legislature tries to figure out how to cut back without inflicting too much pain on the people who can least bear it. The situation is even worse in California.

While our government struggles to provide even the most basic services, many people stop donating as much money to charities, which compromises the ability of charities to make up for the loss of government servies. As a result, there is less money available everywhere to help the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed, or even provide for our children's basic needs, such as healthcare and education. Our infrastructure continues to crumble, and we cut, cut, cut until all of the organizations and programs that make our communities livable are struggling to survive. In other words, no one benefits.

So how do we pull ourselves out of this downward spiral?

As individuals, we must set our fears aside and start to expand again. We are powerful, divine beings made flesh, and we are forgetting who we are. Our source is the ultimate creator, and this source does not know the meaning of "lack." This is a concept that we made up. It is not real. If you are experiencing lack, it is because you believe that you are capable of lacking anything. To heal this, change your consciousness.

Affirm to the Universe that all of your needs are met. Feel your gratitude for that. Know that your needs are met right now. Live in an expansive way. Share your table with a friend. Treat yourself to a movie or a night on the town if you have the means at hand. Offer your services to someone who needs them.

In our society, we have become confused about what abundance looks like. We think it means lots of money in the bank, a large house, several nice cars, a big-screen TV, and an iPhone. Of course, these things can result from your abundance. There is nothing wrong with having them. But they are not, in themselves, your abundance. If you think that they are, then you are giving your power away.

Don't focus on the stuff. Focusing on the stuff is what got so many people into debt. You can expand without getting into debt. Debt is just another form of contraction, because you have surrendered your power to someone else. Debt is born of the fear of lack, and that is why it's so important to heal this issue.

Money is not a bad thing. It's just energy, and it will take on whatever thoughts or feelings that you give to it. Many people give money the power to make them happy or unhappy. That's a pretty amazing power to convey upon a piece of paper or a coin. Instead, recognize that money is energy that supports you and others in being abundant. When you pay your bills, buy your groceries, eat dinner in a restaurant, or hire someone to clean your house, understand that you are sharing your abundance with others. You are sharing abundance energy so that the electric company employees, grocers and farmers, chefs and wait staff, and your housekeeper can have their abundance, too. We are all interdependent, and our abundance affects everyone else's.

Stop listening to the fear-mongering and expand. Still employed and doing ok? Don't stop going out to dinner. Buy the things you need. You don't have to go crazy—you're not going to single-handedly support the economy of your town. Just avoid holding on to your wealth unnecessarily because you are feeling afraid.

The economy is in a healing crisis, and some companies and products do not serve us any more. The things we don't really need are going away, but there will always be things we do need, and that do serve us. These are our growth areas. Are you unemployed and searching? Be flexible and expand yourself. If you're struggling with finding a new job, expand your horizons and consider possibilities you hadn't thought of before. Opportunities are there, but they may not look like what you expect.

If we can expand, we'll create new opportunities for everyone. Imagine expanding yourself, pursuing the dream of your heart, and ultimately providing employment for others.

Fear is always accompanied by contraction, while expansion often requires great courage. It requires great trust. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase." Expansion is like that. The Universe will illuminate the next step and ask you to raise yourself to it. When you do, the next step becomes clear, and so on. Then when you look back to see just how far you've come, you realize that there are other people behind you, climbing the now-visible stairway that you had the faith and courage to illuminate.

The Universe is always on your side. It is never not on your side. There is no way that you can screw up or make the Universe want to punish you. You can only punish yourself. The flow of abundance is already there for you. All you have to do is stop believing in lack and the power that other situations or things has over you. Take back your power and expand. You are expansive and powerful by nature. That is the real you. Share it with the rest of the world.
