Spiritual book recommendations

The following books have helped our spiritual growth in some way. I've divided them into categories to make it easier to find what you may be interested in.

In addition, we have a number of articles about spirituality, information about metaphysics, and movie and music recommendations.

Getting started

You're interested in spirituality, but you're not sure where to start? These are books that can help you start down this path.

Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 1)
by Neale Donald Walsch
This is an excellent starting place. The message is simple: God talks to everyone. Our job is to listen. After a number of hardships, Neale began to listen, he wrote down what he heard, and this book is the result.

Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2)
by Neale Donald Walsch
Book two in the series of conversations.

Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 3)
by Neale Donald Walsch
Book three in the series of conversations.

Living with Joy: Keys to Personal Power and Spiritual Transformation
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer
This, and the other books by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer, was recommended to me by my Reiki instructor, and they are a great way to get started and learn how to talk to Spirit, and to listen for the reply. If you don't know where to start, start with these.

Opening to Channel: How to Connect with Your Guide
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

Out on a Limb
by Shirley MacLaine
I would be remiss indeed if I didn't include the work that was my "wake-up call." Everyone has one. Some book, some movie, some event reminded your soul why you are here, and you began to search. When I was in high school, the mini-series based on this book came on TV. I had been searching for a spirituality that made sense to me, and this was my "Aha!" moment. I eventually read everything Shirley MacLaine had written up until that point.

Soul Love: Awakening Your Heart Centers
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

Spiritual Growth: Being Your Higher Self
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

To Bee or Not to Bee
by John Penberthy
This is a nice parable that makes for good reading for childen or adults. It's about a worker honeybee who wonders about the meaning of life and pursues his own spiritual path.

Spiritual growth and awakening

A Course in Miracles
This book was channeled from Jesus Christ in order to convey his true message, which, shall we say, had gotten pretty distorted with time. The brilliance of it is that it is structured in a way that anyone who has the desire can heal themselves and become just as Christ was on this earth. That being said, this is not a six-week project, or a six-year project, but a life-long study. Are you ready for the next level? Here it is.

The Disappearance of the Universe
by Gary R. Renard
Gary received spiritual instruction from two entities, and this text relies heavily on A Course in Miracles. Think of this as the Cliff's Notes version. Read this for a nice overview and the story of Gary's journey, then dive into A Course in Miracles yourself.

The Joining
by Vishara Veda
This is the story of two twin souls who find each other in order to fulfill their sacred life purpose. In addition to being an interesting story, there is an energy to this book that I can't describe, but you will feel it resonate within yourself for some time after reading it.

Revelation: Joseph's Message
channeled by Michael G. Reccia
I like this book. It discusses some of the concepts that appear in other works in more depth, but it also provides an introduction to some concepts that appear in A Course in Miracles. So really, this is kind of an intermediate study. You could start here and then move on to A Course in Miracles.

Shamanism and power animals

Animal-Speak: The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small
Animal-Wise: The Spirit Language and Signs of Nature
by Ted Andrews
The Universe is constantly conspiring in your favor, and it will send you signs in the world around you. When a new animal enters your life, whether in a dream, or a fleeting glimpse in your own back yard, it is there to tell you something. Ted Andrews's books help you to understand the messages that nature brings to you.

Animal Spirit Guides: Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic Path
by Chris Lüttichau
I particularly like this little book. It makes a nice companion to Ted Andrews' books. For one thing, it's beautifully illustrated and just aesthetically pleasing all around; this is important to me. For another, it has some simple, but effective advice for getting to know your power animals and creating ritual and ceremony for your spiritual practice. Really lovely.

Healing money and abundance issues

The Abundance Book
by John Randolph Price
Do you struggle with money? Does it seem like your ship never quite comes in? You're probably focusing on the wrong thing. This simple little book, which costs all of $7, will help you change your consciousness about money and abundance. This change in consciousness will open the vein and allow it to pour into your life. Sound to good to be true? Remember, "Thoughts are things," and this book will help you change your thoughts. We speak from personal experience. If you buy no other book to help you on your path, buy this one. It will ultimately help you with more than just money. (Note that Mr. Price uses what many people think of as Christian terminology, but please don't let that put you off. It is simply the language that he knows. If the word "God" is a trigger for you, mentally replace it with "the Universe," if you prefer, but understand that this book is in no way denominational or based on one particular religion.)

40 Day Prosperity Plan (Audio CD)
by John Randolph Price
If hearing things helps you to learn them, this CD complements The Abundance Book, mentioned above.

Creating Money: Keys to Abundance
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

Indigo, Rainbow, Crystal, and Crystal-Rainbow children

The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children
by Doreen Virtue
I think this is Doreen's first book on the Indigo children (though I may be wrong!). It captures her initial experiences with what many describe as "the first wave new children."

The Crystal Children
by Doreen Virtue
This small, inexpensive book was published by popular demand and distills some of the experiences and information that Doreen has provided in her talks. A great introduction to these special children!

The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer
by Harvey Karp, M.D.
We like Dr. Karp's techniques for soothing a crying baby. They really work, and both you and your newborn will sleep better.

Happiest Toddler on the Block: How to Eliminate Tantrums and Raise a Patient, Respectful, and Cooperative One- to Four-Year-Old
by Harvey Karp, M.D.
Dr. Karp has some great techniques for putting an end to temper tantrums in a very loving and respectful way.

Indigo, Crystal, and Rainbow Children
by Doreen Virtue
This is an audio CD featuring Doreen talking about her experiences with these children.

Parenting with Love and Logic
by Foster W. Cline and Jim Fay
All children, but especially the ones coming in today, need gentle, loving, firm discipline. They need boundaries and limits, and they need to learn to accept responsibility for their own actions. We really like the methods laid out in this book.

Crystals

Love is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals
by Melody
Everything you ever wanted to know about different kinds of crystals, their use, their vibration, etc. This is very comprehensive. For the serious rock hound!

Love is in the Earth: Kaleidoscopic Pictorial Supplement A
by Melody
This is a pictorial supplement to A Kaleidoscope of Crystals.

Love is in the Earth: Kaleidoscopic Pictorial Supplement Z
by Melody
This is the second pictorial supplement to A Kaleidoscope of Crystals.

Oracle and healing cards

Oracle cards, Tarot, and other tools provide a simple, non-threatening way for Spirit to talk to you. Tarot can be a more complex system, but most of these decks are easy to use and friendly. Most are Oracle cards from Doreen Virtue, so if you don't see anything that strikes your fancy here, she has published many, many others, so check out what's available.

Archangel Oracle Cards
by Doreen Virtue
We have this deck and use it often. We love the angels, and this is a very soothing way to interact with them.

Healing with the Angels Oracle Cards
by Doreen Virtue
We also really like this deck, filled with angel energy. We pull cards at least once a week.

Healing with the Fairies: Oracle Cards
by Doreen Virtue
We have a lot of fairies in our house, and they help us constantly. Naturally, we love this deck. It was the first of this kind that we bought.

Magical Unicorn Oracle Cards
by Doreen Virtue
This is a great deck for children. We bought this for our daughter for Christmas, although she's a bit too young to enjoy it yet.

Robin Wood Tarot
This is my favorite Tarot deck. Choosing a Tarot deck is a personal decision, and there are many to choose from, but this is my personal recommendation. It has the symbolism of the Rider-Waite, but much friendlier artwork. I like to use it in combination with Karmic Tarot, by William C. Lammey. It's a more complex layout that takes some time to learn, but it can provide a lot of information and, well, it's fun.

Our shared spiritual history

The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life, Vol. I
The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life, Vol. II
by Drunvalo Melchizedek
If you're after esoteric information, this is it. Drunvalo puts everything but the kitchen sink in here. If you're particularly interested in sacred geometry, this is a must-read.

The Hiram Key
by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas
These two Freemasons do a pretty good job of mostly solving the ancient riddle at the heart of Freemasonry. What is the secret that this brotherhood has been protecting for thousands of years?

Holy Blood, Holy Grail
by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln
This is the original scholarship on the bloodline of Jesus Christ and his wife, Mary Magdalen. If you're interested in this topic, this is the book to read.

The Woman with the Alabaster Jar
by Margaret Starbird
A devout Catholic, Margaret Starbird originally set out to disprove the scholarship of the authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, but after intensive research, found that she could not. The skeptic became the converted. This is Ms. Starbird's contribution to the scholarship surrounding the bloodline of Christ and Mary Magdalen.
